If you’re struggling to make ends meet, if you’ve experienced a major trauma or have been a victim of violence, it can be so easy to lose faith in yourself and stop caring about your future. We created the Self-Reliance Scholarship Program because we’ve seen this first hand.
No matter who you are or where you come from, you are not alone. We see you.
The Foundation for Self-Reliance offers need-based scholarships for structured physical training programs that require the participant to progress in ability and skill over time, such as martial arts, self-defense programs, dance classes, gymnastics, and swimming lessons.
The participant pays on a need-based sliding scale of no more than $30/mo per person.
The applicant may request access to an approved program of their choice, or they can choose from a list of pre-approved high-quality programs and facilities.
Limitations: The scholarship cannot be used for “open access” programs like gym memberships. The Foundation cannot send cash directly to the applicants. The Foundation currently works only with community members within the San Francisco Bay Area.
Applicants must demonstrate financial need and provide an in-person interview in order to qualify for the Self-Reliance Scholarship. Applicants should keep in mind that during the application process, they will be asked to document information regarding their identities, incomes, employment, and the expense for which they are applying.
